Good day dear readers!
It took me a few years to figure out it isn’t the expensive lenses or cameras that make most professionals images look so good on the web. It is just a matter of how you prepare your image! Off course you need a good photo to begin and that is technically correct or just pleasing to the eye.
Take a look at these three images. Now if you don’t see a difference you probably don’t need to read the rest of this article.
The first image looks softer than the second and that is because I didn’t apply any sharpening to it. The second Image I resized the file and then applied some sharpening to it. In the third Image which looks the best I sharpened the Image and then resized it.
You can obviously see it isn’t a good idea to not apply any sharpening to your photos. The second and third Image may look quite similar to you and you will only start seeing differences when you look at the finer details like the grass in the foreground.
The reason we can’t get the same amount of sharpness in the second image is because we didn’t have a lot of detail to start with. Remember that image number two is actually images number one with some sharpening. With Image three we apply the sharpening to the full size image where there is more detail to start with.
You can however apply more sharpening to the resized image but this leads to sharpening halo’s which don’t look good at all. And just in case you are interested I have also prepared an image that is obviously over sharpened.
Happy shooting!
