Nikon 35mm f1.8

Some people were confused when Nikon first announced the 35mm DX lens. At the time there was some speculation whether the DX format would be cancelled down the line. It was only a year and a few months after the D3 came out which boasted the first 35mm digital sensor for Nikon.

I was still shooting with my trusty D300 at the time and decided to give this lens a try after reading the specifications. I have always like my 50mm but it wasn’t wide enough for me and the closest focus distance made it very unlikely that I would use it without extension tubes most of the time.

I picked the lens up on a Thursday morning just before a trip we had planned to the beautiful Dullstroom area in Mpumalanga. It’s always nice to use a new lens in the field and review the images when you get home unless off course you get a bad copy with a focus problem. Luckily this was not the case. I used the 35mm quite extensively and was very much enjoying it except for one thing. Sometimes the bokeh the lens produces isn’t very pleasing. Other than that it was much better than the 50mm I was use to.

Pros
  • Small
  • Very close focus distance
  • Extremely sharp wide open

Cons
  • Price
  • Strange bokeh
  • Slow focus

I highly recommend this lens over the 50mm if you have the extra money.

Here are some sample images taken with this lens on a D300 and D700

Happy Shooting!
